The school curriculum at Breiðagerðisskóli is under continuous review, with the school’s strategy being an integral part of this process. The National Curriculum for Primary Schools, General Section (2011), states that the school curriculum reflects the school’s Education Policy and the values that underpin its activities.

6 key pillars of the Education Policy

The Education Policy in the National Curriculum is built on six key pillars of education, which are intended to guide teaching, play, and learning in schools. These key pillars are:

• literacy
• sustainability
• health and welfare
• democracy and human rights
• equality
• creativity

Breiðagerðisskóli seeks ways to implement the Education Policy outlined in the new National Curriculum and Reykjavík City’s strategy.

Guiding principles of the Department of Education & Youth

The Department of Education & Youth’s 2016 Strategy and Operational Plan states its guiding principles: all children and young people in the city should have access to education and play that suit their needs, fostering creativity and initiative, and building on each individual’s strengths, interests, and skills. To ensure they feel good, continually progress, and receive upbringing and education that will serve them in life. The Department of Education & Youth’s strategy map highlights that city schools should focus on developing students’ strong self-identity and social skills. Education and activities should be inclusive and tailored to each individual’s needs. The strategy also emphasizes student collaboration grounded in democratic values and diversity.

More information about learning and teaching can be found in Chapters 5–8 of Breiðagerðisskóli’s Strategy and Operational Plan.

Attendance guidelines

The school emphasizes student punctuality. All children aged 6 to 16 must attend school, and parents/guardians are responsible for their enrollment, attendance, and participation.

If attendance issues arise, parents/guardians and the school must respond. To ensure effective responses, Reykjavík's primary schools follow unified guidelines and rules.
